Payload or Towing? Know the Difference Before You Haul

Payload capacity is the total weight your vehicle can carry inside the cab and bed combined. This includes passengers, cargo, gear, accessories, and any tongue weight transferred from an attached trailer. It does not include the vehicle's own weight.

Payload capacity is calculated by subtracting your vehicle's curb weight from its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR):

• Payload Capacity = GVWR − Curb Weight

Your specific payload rating can be found on the yellow Tire and Loading Information sticker on the driver's side door jamb, as well as in your owner's manual.

Towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can pull behind it using a trailer hitch. Because the trailer's axles support most of the load rather than your vehicle's axles, towing capacity is typically higher than payload capacity.

Towing capacity is determined using the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR), which represents the maximum combined weight of your loaded vehicle and a loaded trailer. Engine choice, transmission, axle ratio, drivetrain, and cab configuration can all affect a vehicle's towing capacity.

Although payload and towing are separate ratings, they share a connection through tongue weight. Tongue weight is the downward force that a trailer's coupler places on your vehicle's hitch, and it counts against your payload capacity. For conventional trailers, tongue weight is typically around 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight.

This means that the more a trailer presses down on your hitch, the less remaining payload you have for passengers and cargo. Both limits need to be respected at the same time, regardless of how much room remains under the other rating.

Exceeding either rating can affect vehicle handling, braking, suspension, and tire performance. Common consequences of overloading can include:

• Reduced braking performance: Additional weight beyond the vehicle's rating can increase stopping distances.
• Suspension strain: Overloading the bed or hitch can compress the rear suspension and reduce steering control.
• Increased tire wear: Carrying or towing beyond rated limits can put additional stress on tires.
• Drivetrain stress: Engines, transmissions, and cooling systems may work harder than intended under excessive loads.
• Trailer sway: An improperly loaded or overweight trailer can become difficult to control, particularly at highway speeds or in crosswinds.

Staying within your vehicle's payload and towing ratings helps support predictable handling, braking, and performance while reducing unnecessary strain on key components.
