Community Spotlight: The Boxer Rescue
Have you ever thought about adopting a fur baby? Does your heart melt whenever you see those adorable rescue animals in those ads on television, and you wish you could just take them all in? Perhaps you don’t really want to adopt but you would like to do something to help.
If you’ve ever liked or been interested in boxers — or if you’re open to getting to know them — there’s a great option for you. Proudly serving the New England area, The Boxer Rescue Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that’s making a huge difference in these dogs’ lives.
About The Boxer Rescue
The Boxer Rescue is made up of volunteers with one common thread — they love boxers and want them to get the chance to have the happy lives that they deserve. A true testament to this is that each of the directors has adopted boxers.
The organization was formed in 2010 when it became apparent that there was a definite need for boxer rescue in New England. They aim to educate and inform the public about this particular breed, as well as to be a source of support for boxer owners. They strongly believe in and advocate responsible dog ownership.
The Situation
Owning a boxer isn’t exactly what you would call a walk in the park. From birth through much of their adult life they maintain high energy levels and need plenty of exercise. That can equate to a lot of playing and lots of walks. Since not every dog lover can keep up with them, many boxers are surrendered (the owner returns them or gives them to a rescue organization), or they are abandoned. There are also cases of abuse and neglect. The dogs may require medical attention and may not even have received so much as basic training from their previous owners.
However, the fact remains that boxers are very loving, family-friendly dogs. That’s one of the reasons why they make excellent companions. Once they are placed in the right environment, they will thrive. A loving home would certainly be an excellent foundation. The Boxer Rescue strives to give them that chance so that they can lead the full, long, and happy lives that they deserve.
What They Do
The Boxer Rescue seeks to place boxers in safe, happy homes with families who will take good care of them. Unlike shelters, they do not have a facility to house the dogs. Instead, they place the dogs in temporary/foster homes. This gives them the chance to learn more about them (needs, personality, behaviors, etc.) and allows for the proper care of the dogs in the interim. Once they get this information, they interview interested individuals/families for permanent homes for the boxers. Matches are then made based on mutual compatibility.
