For 2021, the Jeep Cherokee can be had with one of three engines, each of which has unique characteristics that alter performance. If you want to emphasize fuel economy, raw horsepower, or capability, the Cherokee makes it easy to do so.
The smallest offering is a turbocharged 2.0L engine boasting 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. At an EPA-estimated 23 city MPG/31 highway MPG, this 2.0L is the most efficient option in the lineup, too.
While the 2.4L engine doesn’t match the efficiency of the 2.0L, it can still go 474 highway miles on a single tank while producing 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque.
Finally, you can step up to the 3.2L V6 if you want, an option boasting 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque.
Choosing Your Towing Capacity
The engine you select for your 2021 Jeep Cherokee is going to directly affect the maximum towing capacity of the SUV. Each of the three possible engines have their own tow rating.
The 2.4L engine rates at the low-end of the spectrum, with a maximum towing capacity of just 2,000 pounds. Moving to the 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder gives you access to 4,000 pounds of maximum towing capacity.
Finally, the 2.4L V6 is the most capable engine as it delivers 4,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity.
